My Obsidian and Codex Workflow

By Augmented Artisan

Summary

## Key takeaways - **Create Vault with Codex Prompt**: Launch a terminal and type codex to use AI to manage the Obsidian Vault and its structure by entering a prompt to create the vault. [00:52], [01:14] - **Install Templater and Calendar Plugins**: Install Templater, which lets us create daily notes with a template, and Calendars, which gives a calendar view of our journals, then enable them. [00:23], [00:41] - **Configure Folders for Daily Notes**: Configure Obsidian to use the right folders like the daily folder for daily notes and the template folder for storing templates, so new files initialize correctly. [01:24], [01:37] - **Run Init to Document Vault**: After setting the structure, run the init command to document the vault so that next time when we want to change something, our agent will know where things are stored. [01:41], [02:02] - **Build Custom Skills for Summaries**: Create custom skills to give superpowers to Obsidian organization, for example, making summaries of journals like an automatic summary of our work week. [02:02], [02:55] - **Use Gemini for Internet Research**: Use Gemini instead of Codex to research what skills are and how to create them because Gemini is very good at searching the internet. So let's start from the very beginning. We're going to create our own vault. For

me, it will be called Augmented Artisan. And we hit the Create button after choosing the location. The

the location. The first step is installing the necessary plugins.

So for me, there will be two. There's Templater, which lets us create daily notes with a template. and there's also calendars which gives us a calendar view of our journals.

And don't forget to enable them afterwards.

So now we're going to use AI to manage our Obsidian Vault and its structure.

To do that, we just launch a terminal and type codex. But you can also use other agents like Cloud Code or Gemini. They have their own uses, but I'll come back to that later. Next, we'll type in the prompt to create the vault.

I'll put the text of mine in the video description.

We can see in Obsidian that it has created all the folders. Now we're

going to configure Obsidian, so it uses the right folders to initialize new files. So

here, for example, we choose the daily folder for daily notes.

and the template folder for storing our templates. That

way, when we go to the daily note, we'll see it's automatically placed in the right directory. With the structure correctly configured as the default model, we can change this

right directory. With the structure correctly configured as the default model, we can change this later using our agent. Now that we have a structure, it's important to run the init command to document our vault so that next time when we want to change something, our agent will know where things are stored.

Here, we clearly see the agent file that describes our entire structure. Now that we have that the next step, and this is where it gets fun, is that we can create our own skills to give superpowers to our organization and our obsidian. For

example, making summaries of our journals. I'll give you an example. We're going to use Gemini to research what skills are and how to create them. Why Gemini and not Codex? Because Gemini is very good at searching the internet, so we'll launch it in

Codex? Because Gemini is very good at searching the internet, so we'll launch it in another terminal. and we're going to ask it to create our resource on skills.

another terminal. and we're going to ask it to create our resource on skills.

We'll let it work.

We can see the note has been created. Our own assistant has done the prep work for us in the next episode. We'll

see how to create these skills. For example, getting an automatic summary of our work week. More in the next episode. Subscribe so you don't miss it.
